Creating opportunities, reaching potentials

What is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational Therapists promote skill development and independence in all daily living tasks.

Occupational Therapy can benefit children with various difficulties including physical impairments and challenges, learning and behavioural difficulties, developmental delays, vision and hearing impairments and emotional outbursts and dysregulation.

What is Sensory Processing?

(Sometimes referred to as Sensory Integration.)

"Sensory" pertains to our senses: hearing, sight, smell, touch, taste and perception of motion, movement and gravity. "Integration" is the process of unifying, or allowing the brain to use the information that the senses take in. Sensory processing refers to the way the nervous system receives messages from the senses and turns them into appropriate motor and behavioural responses.

Occupational Therapists are especially concerned about organization of sensory information for use in the classroom, on the playground, for activities of daily living, and lastly, relationships and interactions with others.

Difficulties in sensory processing may result in an inability to regulate sensory input. This results in various behaviours including sensitivity to sensations, inconsistent or confused responses to situations, disorganized behavior, poor peer interactions, immature social/emotional development, reduced self esteem or self control and poor academic development.
